Having been associated with children of all ages and stages, classes and cultures, through my experience as a teacher, I have finally found my 'real' vocation. I have enjoyed every bit of my teaching, making a sincere effort to mould each child into a complete person, without fear or inhibitions and to reach out to each of them with love and patience. The 'syllabus' was never as important to me as the 'student'. I would be naturally drawn to children with some kind of problem family, emotional, academic, economics, physical, within the class room take upon myself the task to encourage, help to understand them so that they may overcome their problems even if to a certain extent.
Having discovered where my interest lay, I found a golden opportunity when I met Dr. Sunita Sodhi under whom I was trained as a special educator. To my bewilderment I learnt about the term 'dyslexia' on learning disability wherein the child has difficulty in learning to use and process language concepts. This difficulty may manifest itself as an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell and do mathematical calculations. These do not include problems due to physical, emotional or cultural disadvantages. These under action even are generally labeled, ridiculed, rejected, ignored, victimised and may eventually drop out of school and develop certain undesirable behavior to release their energy.
Enducare is a non-profit voluntary organization set up to assist schools and parents to identify, screen and provide remedial help to children with learning disabilities. Educare has setup learning Centers in various schools in and around Delhi. The aim of these Learning Centers is provide remedial help to the children within the school environments on one to one basis. Depending on their reading and spelling level they are brought upto the class level and mainstreamed. The teaching is a very structured, phonological approach and employs many play'way activities to keep the child's interest alive. It is slow but sure and above all it radiates hope and success for the learning disabled.
